The Eerie Silence
There has been very little news today. For me, it’s been a very manic situation. I’ve hit a pretty hard stage of doubt. There’s nothing more I want than unification.
Here’s the reader’s digest version.
- A couple of weeks ago, news broke that Tony George was offering a full package, plus entrance into the TEAM program (a $1.2m per year subsidy to race teams who run the full schedule) to all Champ Car teams who wish to join if the two series become one. This offer was rejected, and mostly written off by me. I had given up on the hope of unification after the debacle of 2006.
- 7 Feb 2008, 9:45 CST – Robin Miller posts an article, with a lot of quotes, with only Eric Bachelart showing any reservations. I kind of freaked out. Even Kevin Kalkhoven was very much for the idea, if not bullish. Tony George was more reserved, concerned about moving Motegi
- The world is then informed, I believe by Curt Cavin, that TG and Robert Clarke are heading to Japan to meet with Honda execs. For some reason, I heavily doubted Honda. The primary reason for this was that the idea of moving Motegi to the end of the season would be very close to Motegi’s MotoGP race.
- 11 Feb 2008 – TG meets with Honda. Honda gives their blessing and encouragement, promising to work with them with the Motegi race, or even cancel it for 2008, if necessary. Holy cow, this thing might actually happen.
- 12 Feb 2008 – Rumors start circulating stating that Gerald Forsythe is not in favor of the merger. KK still wants out, with his team PKV. Derrick Walker has gone on record saying that he has, more or less, lost faith in CCWS and will go forward with plans to jump ship until he sees some action that convinces him otherwise. Newman/Haas/Lanigan (for 2008, they have already stated intentions of jumping by 2009) and Minardi also have rumors about of them jumping.
No one should have been surprised. GF for some reason hates TG. I think TG must have slept with GF’s sister or something. Point being, the mutants over at CCF are convinced their series is saved. Everyone over at the SpeedTV forums continue to have no clue. TrackForum hasn’t really blown me away with their enthusiasm.
And then there’s me. I write this first blog to you as a defeated man.
