Special Telecon for the Media Tomorrow
The league is having a teleconference for the media tomorrow at 2 PM EDT. While the initial gut reaction is that this would be the title sponsor announcement that has been heavily anticipated, I wouldn’t hold my breathe. I’d think they’d have a real press conference for something that major. My guess is that it would involve something that serves as an addendum to something that has already happened, like Surfers 2009 or PT coming back for a few more races. No idea, though.

Good call. I bet you are right about Surfers.

If a teleconference is too small for a title sponsor announcement, it’s likewise way too much for a Surfers announcement. That’s something you just post on the web site and issue a press release. Was there a teleconference to announce that Infineon is signed through 2011?
The conference includes TG and various other league officers. Seems like they are trying to intimate that this is a big announcement based on the (supposed) press release that I’ve seen. They described it as “major.” They aren’t going to jerk the press around on that.
Maybe they’ll announce that ESPN is out.

The IndyCar Series will return to ABC-TV for five races in 2009, including the Indianapolis 500, but the rest of the races will move from ESPN and ESPN2 to Versus, series and television officials confirmed Wednesday.
Versus, which is owned by Comcast and is home to the NHL and the Tour de France, will carry a minimum of 13 races next year in a multiyear agreement.

IndyFan02 got it, unfortunately, right down to copy/pasting Curt Cavin’s article. Really? …REALLY? It is so sad to see that a series that is “on the rise,” as everyone in and around it will tell you, could get run into the ground by a lame-duck TV contract because ESPN apparently needed more airtime in order to…well, who knows what exactly it is they do anymore. At least we might be able to do away with timed races and late cut-ins to races in progress.
